The Bombali District Human Rights Committee said on Monday 20th November 2023 it is gravely disturbed by tribal statements uttered by the Northeast region Resident Minister Abu Abu Abdulai Koroma on a widely shared video on social media.
The Minister’s utterances, the Committee said, are unfortunate and unacceptable. The statement, the Committee said also tends to undermine the ongoing peace process in the country.
“The statement tends to undermine the ongoing efforts of the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion as well as exacerbate the already polarized situation in the country,” the Committee states in a press statement released on Monday.
A viral video capturing the Resident Minister calling members of the Temne ethnic group uncivilized is making the news on social media. Sierra Leonean Citizens across the world have condemned the Minister’s utterances.
The minister further said he decided not to build houses in Makeni, a city dominated by the Temnes because of the uncivilized attitudes of the Temne people.
As the Committee charged with the protection of human rights, the Bombali District Human Rights Committee deemed Abu Abu’s statements as breaking the peace citizens have been enjoying, and called on him to resign immediately.
A few years ago, the Committee said, the same Minister was also seen in a video inciting and ordering the military and police to shoot and kill citizens who dared protest against the government.
Accordingly, the Committee urges the government and security sector to look into the matter and take action.
Since his appointment as the Resident Minister of Northeast, Hon Abu Abu Abdulai Koroma has always been in the spotlight for making statements that are less expected of a national figure and politicians with large followers.
This man has been always tribalistic ever since, so he must step down from his position as resident minister from that region
But he is a temne too,
HE IS BECOMING ABNORMAL. BECAUSE, HIS NERON IS GETTING WEAK BY THE DAY. SUCH AGE ABLE MEN SHOULD NOT BEING HOLDING PROMINENT POSITIONS IN A SOCIETY.
Very sad statements
What tribe does the minister belongs to?
What made him utter such a statement against the Temnes of which he is a part?
He’s fooling himself because of power, money he’s impressing the Mendes and his party. But little did he know that power will not last forever
He is not a Patriot.
It is rather unfortunate for any defamatory or derogatory statement used against one tribe no matter the circumstances, but who is Abu Abu, does he belong to Temne tribe or another?
A statement like this can cause chaos, civil unrest in a society, especially the country in which we found ourselves today. But this utterance by Abu Abu has different meaning, because he himself is part of this tribe. So there will be no unrest. He has gone through a lot of challenges in the north, he knows his people very well. So he knows why he said that.
Realistically, the Temnes are more tribalistic than the Mendes. If you travel around Sierra Leone, you found more northerners in the south-east having properties, and living there happily, than that of south-easterners in the north. This tribal thing should stop or else it will spread exponentially, hence lead to a conflict. I could remember when Makeni drove Mende man Bishop in the catholic diocese. Throughout these years, the northerners have used more unpleasant words against Mende people. Now they know that it hurting. This was one of the reasons why the Mende people voted against Samura Kamara for his tribal statement
As peaceful Sierra Leonean , as public figures, ministers , Heads of all communities , civil society and permanent chiefs and sections chiefs. And all other protocol members observe. With all due respect we not have No right to say such statements that Abu Abu Abdulai Koroma said on video that spread all over social media. He has to apologize for that statement. The temme people deserve respect from leader like him.
