Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, has called on Denmark to uphold its 0.7% Gross National Income (GNI) commitment to global development, particularly in Africa.
At a high-level conference hosted by Save the Children and Plan International Denmark, Bah urged Danish leaders to strengthen their new Africa Strategy. This call to action comes in response to rising apprehensions regarding reductions in global aid.
Minister Bah shed light on the important role of international aid in shaping his life, illustrating its importance as a vital resource for millions of people. He emphasised that investing in human capital is crucial for fostering security and stability, particularly in areas such as education, climate resilience, and job creation.
Danish political leaders responded positively, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining development funding. The commitment includes a focus on prioritising education, promoting gender equality, and enhancing economic cooperation with African nations.
In a dialogue with Danish Finance Minister Nicolai Wammen, Minister Bah emphasised the crucial role of education in driving Africa’s growth. Wammen wholeheartedly supported this view, highlighting that every child, no matter their background, is entitled to quality educational opportunities.
Denmark’s renewed commitment, championed by Minister Bah, provides hope for sustained international support for Africa at a time of increasing global funding uncertainties.
