The Freetown City Council (FCC) on Friday 9th august commence demolition of structures constructed on illegal reclaimed land at Kroo Bay.
According to FCC, the land created using waste deposits has been a major source of pollution for the ocean and beaches.
It was also stated that those living on the reclaimed land are very exposed to the risk of flooding and the risk of being washed into the ocean by high tides.
The FCC over the weeks has held series of community engagements with residents of the reclaimed land.
FCC will engage over 200 Kroo Bay residents (including those who lived in the demolished structures) in a year-long project to plant 75,000 mangroves in the community. The planting initiative is part of the FreetownTheTreeTown, and is funded by the World Bank.
