A serious fire has swept through hillside residential area of Chief Compound, Quarry, Wilkinson Road in Freetown, reportedly leaving at least seven houses and one shop completely destroyed.

According to initial reports, the blaze broke out after faulty electrical lighting (described as “bad light”) triggered the fire.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire spread rapidly through the tightly packed structures, giving occupants little time to salvage their belongings. Although the full extent of casualties and damage is yet to be officially confirmed, the destruction has left the community in shock.

Local authorities are expected to conduct an assessment of the incident, investigate the suspected electrical fault, and provide emergency support to affected households. The fire has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved electrical safety standards and stronger fire-prevention measures in densely populated areas of Freetown.
