As search and rescue operations continue at the site of the seven-storey building collapse on Shell New Road in Freetown, the Freetown City Council (FCC) has stepped up its involvement in the efforts to locate survivors and clear debris.

Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr emphasized the council’s active participation in the national response efforts. Represented by Deputy Mayor and various councilors, the FCC is collaborating closely with multiple agencies, including the Metropolitan Police, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA), and the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS).

In expressing condolences to the families affected by the tragic collapse, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting all necessary investigations. She strongly backed Vice President H.E. Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh’s call for a comprehensive inquiry into the incident. This investigation will focus on crucial aspects such as whether a building permit was obtained from the Ministry of Lands, the adherence to its terms, and the qualifications of the contractor involved, alongside the quality of materials used in construction.

The mayor also highlighted the importance of implementing national building codes and decentralizing the issuance of building permits from the Ministry of Lands to the 22 local councils in Sierra Leone. These measures are aimed at preventing future incidents and ensuring stricter oversight in building practices.

During this challenging time, the FCC reaffirmed its dedication to assisting in the search and clearance operations and is committed to advocating for policy reforms that will minimize the risks of similar tragedies in the future.
