Guma Valley Water Company has expressed deep concern and dismay over the ongoing bushfires in the area between #2 River and Baw Baw communities.
According to a press release dated 5th February 2025, these fires—primarily caused by human activities—pose a severe threat to the Guma Dam and surrounding water catchment areas, which are critical to providing clean water in the Western Area
The consequences of these fires are far-reaching and include increasing the risk of water shortages due to reduced water quantity and quality, especially during the dry season. The fires are also causing a loss of biodiversity by destroying natural habitats, leading to long-term environmental damage.
Additionally, the destruction of vegetation is weakening the soil, raising the likelihood of erosion, landslides, and mudslides, which can further harm water catchments, particularly during heavy rains.
Guma urged the public to act responsibly and refrain from any activities that may ignite bushfires, adding that protecting the country’s natural resources is essential to safeguarding the water supply for future generations.
Guma also called upon all stakeholders, including local authorities, environmental agencies, and the public, to collaborate in the fight against bushfires and their devastating impact on water sources.
With the help of the public, Guma believe they can preserve the environment and ensure a sustainable water supply in the Western Area.
