Dr. Ibrahim Bangura, a leading flagbearer aspirant of the All People’s Congress (APC), has called for improved wages, stronger labour protections, and expanded opportunities for workers in Sierra Leone, as the country marked International Workers’ Day.

In a statement issued on May 1, Bangura praised the contributions of workers across sectors, describing them as “the true engine of national growth and stability.” He highlighted the role of citizens working in farms, mines, classrooms, markets, and offices in sustaining the country’s development.

However, Bangura noted that many workers continue to face serious challenges. “Far too many of our citizens labour under conditions that do not reflect their worth,” he said, pointing to low wages, limited protections, unemployment among young people, and the high cost of living as pressing concerns.

“A nation cannot prosper when its workforce is undervalued,” he added.

The APC aspirant outlined a commitment to what he described as a “new and inclusive vision” focused on improving working conditions.

According to his statement, this includes promoting decent work, ensuring fair pay, expanding skills development, and strengthening labour institutions.

Bangura also emphasised the importance of investment in education and innovation, saying these are key to building an economy that prioritises people.

“My aspiration is clear: a Sierra Leone where hard work is met with dignity, opportunity is accessible to all, and every citizen can thrive through honest effort,” he stated.

He concluded by expressing solidarity with workers nationwide and reaffirming his commitment to advocating for their rights and welfare.

“Together, let us unite in purpose to build a stronger, fairer, and more prosperous Sierra Leone,” Bangura said in his May Day message.
