Popular APC Member of Parliament Hon. Jawah Sesay has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the government’s negligence concerning the worsening conditions in Kalanthuba and Bumbuna Township.

His concerns were raised following the collapse of four buildings and severe damage to nine others, leaving them on the verge of collapse due to extensive flooding caused by heavy mining activities in the region.

Speaking on behalf of his constituents, Hon. Jawah Sesay, who represents Kalanthuba Kadala, disclosed that the people have not received any compensation despite being prohibited from mining and farming.

As a result, the community is facing unprecedented flooding, leading to widespread diseases and frequent snake bites. The affected areas include Kalanthuba, Kadala, Kasasie, Kateneh, and Kamera, where the living conditions of residents have been severely impacted.

The government has stopped the people from mining and farming, yet no compensation has been provided. Now, they are left to deal with massive flooding that is endangering their lives and livelihoods,” Hon. Jawah stated.

He also highlighted the health risks posed by the situation, as the communities are experiencing outbreaks of diseases and regular snake bites.

Hon. Jawah further explained that Bumbuna Township is also grappling with similar challenges. In the Norenda area of Bumbuna, over four houses have already collapsed, and nine other buildings are in a precarious state. “The people are living in fear, and there is growing anxiety that the Bumbuna Dam itself may collapse,” he added.

The worsening conditions have sparked panic among residents, forcing many to flee their homes in search of safety in neighboring communities. According to Hon. Jawah, the situation has reached a critical point, and urgent intervention is needed to prevent further disaster.

As a dedicated representative of his people, Hon. Jawah revealed that he has repeatedly raised the issue with relevant authorities, both at the constituency and district levels. He has contacted the Electricity Generation and Transmission Company (EGTC), the Ministry of Energy, Deputy Ministers 1 and 2, as well as the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA). In addition, he has led a high-level delegation to Bumbuna to inform officials about the urgent need for action.

He attributed the flooding and building collapses to the heavy mining activities taking place upriver at Lake Sonfoh, warning that if immediate action is not taken, the situation could escalate into a more severe disaster for the people of Kalanthuba, Bumbuna, and surrounding communities.

The community awaits government intervention as Hon. Jawah continues to advocate for their welfare, urging authorities to address the ongoing crisis before it spirals out of control.
