The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has expressed deep sorrow and outrage following the brutal killing of Samuel Brima Mattia, a former reporter for VOPAD Radio 96.5 FM and a dedicated member of the Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL).

Samuel was murdered under unclear and violent circumstances on Thursday, January 16, 2025, in Waterloo.

In a press release, SLAJ unequivocally condemned the violence, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding press freedom and the lives of journalists who work tirelessly to inform and educate the public. “We are deeply distressed by this tragic loss and call for an immediate and thorough investigation,” SLAJ stated.

The association has urged the Sierra Leone Police to conduct a comprehensive and prompt inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Samuel’s death to ensure that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice. SLAJ stressed that impunity for such heinous crimes must not be allowed.

SLAJ is closely coordinating with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at the Waterloo Division, which is currently handling the investigation. The organization remains committed to advocating for the safety and protection of journalists across the country.

As the journalism community mourns the loss of Samuel, SLAJ stands in solidarity with SWASAL, Samuel’s family, and all those affected by this tragic event. The association extended its deepest condolences and pledged continued support during this difficult time.
