Kambia District marked a momentous achievement in education and healthcare with the inauguration of the Simon Jen Nursery School in Masama.
A project driven by Community Health Officer (CHO) Mohamed Kamara, who also serves as Surgeon and Country Director of the Kambia District Foundation.
The initiative was made possible through the support of UK philanthropists Simon David and Jen David, who have played a pivotal role in funding and expanding educational opportunities in the district.
The new school, which includes an on-site health clinic, represents a significant advancement for the community, ensuring local children have access to both education and healthcare services.
The project began when CHO Mohamed Kamara identified the dangers children faced while crossing busy roads to reach distant schools.
He reached out through social media, attracting the attention of Simon and Jen David, who were moved to assist in creating a safe learning environment.
Initially starting as a temporary structure, the project has since evolved into a comprehensive educational initiative, with the Simon Jen Primary and Secondary Schools in Tonko Limba now serving over 1,000 students.
The November 9th opening ceremony celebrated the partnership between the Masama community and the Davids, who were honored with traditional titles—Simon as “Pa Komrabai” and Jen as “Ya-Alimamy”—to recognize their contributions.
The festive event was filled with music, dance, and speeches, highlighting the profound impact of this international collaboration.
Through the combined efforts of CHO Mohamed Kamara, the Kambia District Foundation, and the generosity of Simon and Jen David, the children of Kambia now have better access to education and healthcare, paving the way for brighter futures in the region.
