Police have arrested a lawyer in connection with the death of a young woman, a case that has ignited public concern and highlighted the nation’s escalating drug crisis.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Brima Kamara confirmed the arrest to SierraEye but stated that the suspect’s name would not be released while the investigation is ongoing.
“Police has arrested a lawyer and that I cannot provide his name,” Kamara told SierraEye.
Sierraloaded previously reported the incident involving the death of a 23-year-old woman whose family has alleged she was given a substance believed to be Ecstasy by the legal practitioner, whom they identified as her boyfriend. The family has filed a formal complaint with the police, demanding a full investigation.
According to family members, the woman informed her roommate that the lawyer had provided her with the pill. They claim to possess electronic messages in which the suspect suggested they both take the drug.
Later that night, the woman returned home in severe distress and was rushed to a hospital, where she died while receiving treatment.
ACP Kamara cautioned that health experts have not yet officially confirmed if drugs were the direct cause of death.
The case has drawn attention to Sierra Leone’s struggle with a drug epidemic. In April 2024, President Julius Maada Bio declared a national emergency on drugs, leading to the creation of the National Task Force on Drug and Substance Abuse (NaTFDSA).
Despite this framework, the use of synthetic drugs like “kush” among young people remains a significant and growing concern.
The family of the deceased is urging the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to expedite its investigation and ensure justice is served.
