The Lawyers Society has called for the immediate release of Lansana Dumbuya, National Secretary General of the All People’s Congress (APC), and urged authorities to discontinue all charges against him.

The Society expressed concern over Mr. Dumbuya’s arrest following remarks he made at an APC meeting on 31 January 2026, exercised in the constitutional right to freedom of expression. It stressed that political speech in a democracy should not attract criminal sanctions.

In its statement, the Lawyers’ Society urged the government to uphold the rule of law and act in the interest of peace, unity, and democratic stability. “Any restriction on lawful expression in the democratic space concerns all who value freedom and the rule of law,” the statement said.

The call highlights ongoing concerns about civil liberties and political freedoms in Sierra Leone.
