Leone Rock Metal Group (LRMG), in partnership with the Chinese medical team, has taken a significant step towards improving women’s health in Sierra Leone by conducting a cervical cancer screening program for women in Pepel, Mile 91, and Bumbuna town.
The initiative highlights the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and the promotion of community health. The program, held for a day, aimed to provide free cervical cancer screening and awareness for women in these three communities, as regions often underserved in terms of healthcare resources.
Cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of death among women in sub-Saharan Africa, largely due to late diagnosis and limited access to preventive care.
LRMG, a key player in the mining sector, leveraged its influence and resources to bring this vital health service to these communities.
The Chinese medical team, with extensive expertise in women’s health, provided the technical knowledge and medical equipment needed for the screenings, and educational sessions on the importance of early detection and preventive measures of cervical cancer.
Hundreds of women turned out for the program, across these three communities and were also given medicines and gifts from the company. Participants were taught about the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is the primary cause of cervical cancer, and were encouraged to seek regular check-ups.
The initiative was praised by community leaders and health professionals alike. Many women expressed gratitude for the opportunity to receive care that would otherwise be inaccessible and expensive too. “This program has given us hope. Many of us have never had the chance to be screened for cervical cancer before,” said by almost every woman that was screened, in these three communities.
Dr. Chen the lead doctor from the Chinese medical team emphasized the importance of early detection. “Cervical cancer is preventable and treatable if detected early. We are proud to partner with LRMG to make a difference in the lives of these women,” she said.
LRMG plans to build on the success of this program by exploring further partnerships to improve healthcare in every region. The company has also pledged to support follow-up treatments for women who may need additional care after the screenings.
