Members of the Liverpool FC Fan Club in Sierra Leone gathered on the evening of July 4th to honor the memory of Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, who tragically died in a car accident in Spain.

Diogo Jota, a prominent forward for Liverpool FC and the Portugal national team, was just 28 years old at the time of his death. His brother, André Silva, also a professional footballer, was 25.

The brothers lost their lives in a car crash that occurred around 12:30 a.m. local time on July 3rd on the A-52 road in Zamora, northwestern Spain.

The Spanish authorities, including the Guardia Civil, stated that the accident was caused by a “burst tire while overtaking,” leading the vehicle to leave the road and subsequently catch fire.

Identification of the brothers was confirmed through documents found at the scene, along with the car’s license plate. Further forensic testing was conducted at a morgue in Zamora.

The remains were later transferred to Puebla de Sanabria, where family members were present to complete the necessary administrative processes for their return to Portugal.

The crash is currently under investigation as a potential speeding incident.

As news of the accident spread, fans in Sierra Leone expressed their sorrow and solidarity with the Jota and Silva families.

A wake for the brothers commenced on the morning of July 4th at the Igreja Martiz de Gondomar, their hometown church located near Porto, Portugal. The church opened its doors to the public later that afternoon, allowing fans and community members to pay their respects. A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. local time (5 a.m. ET).
