A 20-year-old scrap metal trader, Julius Aruna Mongoh, was remanded at the Male Correctional Facility in Freetown on Thursday, 6th February 2025, after facing charges of vandalism and theft involving four air conditioners from the Government Printing Department.

Magistrate Sahr Kekura of Pademba Road Court No.1 denied bail, adjourning the case to 14th February 2025.

Mongoh was arraigned on two charges: malicious damage under Section 51 of the Malicious Damage Act 1861 and larceny under Section 2 of the Larceny Act 1916.

Prosecutors allege that on 1st February 2025, Mongoh dismantled and stole four air conditioners valued at 120,000 Leones (approximately $120 USD) from the Government Printing Department in New England Ville, Freetown.

The accused pleaded not guilty to both charges during the hearing. Prosecution witness Amara Bangura, a security guard employed by Modern Security Agency and assigned to the department, testified that he discovered Mongoh allegedly dismantling one of the units during a patrol around 1:00 a.m. on the day of the incident.

“After noticing a missing air conditioner undergoing repairs, I climbed the retaining wall and saw the accused removing parts and placing them into a rice sack,” Bangura stated during his testimony.

Following the witness’s account, Prosecutor Inspector Kadie Taylor requested an adjournment to further prepare the case. Magistrate Kekura upheld the prosecution’s request, remanding Mongoh pending the next hearing.

The matter resumes on 14th February 2025, with further witnesses expected to test
