A modern primary school worth over €120,000 has been commissioned in Rochain-Mendy, Karene District, marking a significant improvement in the village’s educational infrastructure.
Funded by Italian donors through Rev. Fr. Mario, who runs a local NGO in Lunsar, the school features six classrooms, a head teacher’s office, a water well, toilet facilities, and a protective fence.
The project was spearheaded by Sorie Kamara, a native of Rochain-Mendy and Vice Principal of the Murialdo Vocational Institute, who collaborated with Rev. Fr. Mario to secure funding from ENGIM, an international NGO.
Before the school’s construction, local children faced harsh learning conditions, either studying under palm trees or walking nine kilometers to attend classes in nearby villages.
During the commissioning ceremony, ENGIM’s Country Director, Gerald Aruna, highlighted the project’s importance and urged the community to maintain the facility. Mariatu Kalokoh, the school’s head girl, expressed gratitude on behalf of the pupils, promising to make the most of the opportunity.
Rev. Fr. Mario emphasized that the school represents hope and progress for Rochain-Mendy, but urged parents to ensure their children attend regularly.
Established in 2003 after the civil war, the school has evolved from makeshift structures into a symbol of resilience and development.
As part of the celebrations, donors distributed learning materials, further supporting the village’s educational journey.
Head teacher Kaim Fofanah described the school as a long-awaited dream finally realized, signaling a brighter future for the community.
