The National Youth Commission (NAYCOM), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has held the 5th graduation ceremony for 250 young women who completed skills development programs at the Armed Forces Technical College (AFTEC) in Freetown.

Minister of Youth Affairs, Ibrahim Sannoh, and National Youth Commissioner, Joseph Maada, encouraged the graduates to uphold high moral and disciplinary standards while pledging continued support for youth empowerment and employment opportunities across Sierra Leone.

UNDP representative Fredrick Appiah commended AFTEC for its role in empowering young women and pledged ongoing support, particularly for returnees and single mothers, to foster social and economic growth.

Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Haja Ramatulai Wurie, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the institution in addressing youth unemployment and vulnerability, while Deputy Minister of Defense, Rtd. Col. Moana Brima Massaquoi, expressed gratitude to sponsors, partners, and AFTEC for their contributions to empowering young women.

The National Youth Commission emphasized its ongoing commitment to promoting self-employment and empowering young women to become independent contributors to their communities and national development.

Graduates completed six-month programs in non-traditional skills, including automobile engineering, building and construction, solar and renewable energy, electrical and electronics engineering, welding and fabrication, and civil engineering. Each graduate also received start-up kits to help them establish businesses and achieve self-reliance.
