The Office of National Security (ONS), in collaboration with the German development agency GIZ, successfully hosted a landmark cross-border peace and security meeting on October 31, 2024, at the Kambia District Council Hall.
This significant event brought together a diverse array of representatives from Sierra Leone and Guinea, all united in their commitment to strengthening peace, enhancing social cohesion, and promoting economic development along their shared border.
The summit attracted a wide range of stakeholders, including Paramount Chiefs, local government officials, civil society members, youth and women’s groups, and representatives from the drivers’ union and bike riders.
Their participation underscored the importance of community involvement in fostering cross-border harmony and supporting local economic initiatives.
A highlight of the meeting was the appearance of Paramount Chief Alhajie Alusine Alimamy Sorie Sankoh-Yillah from Gbileh Chiefdom, who has been a longstanding advocate for bilateral cooperation.
Known for his fluency in French, Susu, and other languages, Chief Sankoh-Yillah was recognized for his exceptional ability to bridge cultural divides and enhance unity between Sierra Leone and Guinea. His contributions were lauded as a vital element in the ongoing efforts to maintain peace and understanding between the two nations.
The meeting also featured senior directors from the ONS headquarters in Freetown, who were commended for their strategic insights and unwavering dedication to enhancing security in Kambia District. District Security Coordinator Joshua Bockarie received special recognition for his proactive measures in fortifying border security and ensuring stability in the region. Attendees expressed their appreciation for the ONS’s remarkable commitment to peace and security, describing its efforts as “first-rate.”
As the summit concluded, participants gathered for a group photograph, symbolizing their collective dedication and collaborative spirit in pursuing lasting peace and socioeconomic progress.
The event, supported by GIZ, is regarded as a crucial step toward reinforcing peace and enhancing economic prospects in the Sierra Leone-Guinea border region.
