The Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), through the National Civil Aviation Facilitation Committee (NCAFC), has immediately implemented new public health safety measures at Freetown International Airport (FNA) in response to a recent increase in Mpox cases across Sierra Leone.
These measures aim to strengthen prevention efforts and ensure a safe travel environment.
Among the immediate actions taken are the installation of thermal imaging cameras at the main terminal entrance. These cameras will automatically scan the body temperature of all individuals entering the terminal building. Anyone detected with an elevated temperature will be promptly referred to the airport’s medical unit for further evaluation, adhering strictly to the guidelines set by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.
Additionally, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, alcohol-based hand sanitizer stations have been strategically placed throughout the FNA terminal to promote good hygiene practices among passengers and staff.
To protect essential personnel, 300 airport staff members have already received Mpox vaccinations. The SLCAA is actively working with the Ministry of Health to ensure comprehensive vaccination coverage for all airport personnel.
The SLCAA also advises all passengers and the general public to maintain safe distancing at all times while within the airport premises.
The authority is urging full cooperation from all passengers, emphasizing that “collective vigilance is essential to maintaining a safe travel environment for all airport users.”
