26-year-old student Foday Salam Kamara and 44-year-old private security officer Alimamy Abudeen Kamara have appeared before Magistrate Sahr Kekura at Pademba Road Court No.1 in Freetown on charges of conspiracy and office breaking and larceny, contrary to Section 26(1) of the Larceny Act of 1916.
According to the prosecution, the accused conspired with others unknown to commit a felony on December 23, 2024, at No. 39 Adelaide Street in the Western Area, Freetown.
The second charge alleges that, on the same date and location, the accused broke into the office of Abdul Rahman Kamara, the Chief Executive Officer, and stole 109,000 Leones.
The prosecution, led by Inspector Kadie M. Taylor, called its first witness, Abdul Rahman Kamara, a pharmacist. Kamara testified that he knew the first accused, who had previously deputized for him at the pharmacy, but did not know the second accused.
He recalled that on December 23, 2024, while in Kambia, he received a call around 11:30 a.m. from one of his nurses, informing him of an incident at the pharmacy. Upon receiving the information, he immediately traveled to Freetown.
Upon arrival, he went straight to his pharmacy, where he met the nurse who had called him, along with a police officer. He stated that upon inspecting his office, he found that the window had been broken. He further explained that his office safe, which required both a key and a code to access, had been tampered with.
He emphasized that only one person knew where the key was kept, and that key was now in police custody.
At this point, the prosecutor requested a short adjournment to allow for further consultations with the witness.
Meanwhile, defense counsel M. Amara applied for bail on behalf of the accused, arguing that they are Sierra Leonean residents with reliable sureties willing to enter into recognizance on their behalf. He assured the court that the accused would not interfere with witnesses or abscond and made the application pursuant to Section 79(2) of the Criminal Procedure Act No. 32 of 1965.
After hearing the application, Magistrate Kekura granted bail to both accused in the sum of 200,000 Leones each, or one surety each in like sum. The sureties must:
Be residents of Freetown
Be employed by a recognized institution
Provide proof of employment and residential status
Bail is to be approved by the Deputy Assistant Registrar.
The case was adjourned to February 14, 2025, for further hearing.
