A Sierra Leone Police officer has come under fire after allegedly attempting to plant illegal drugs in a shop on Free Street, Central Freetown.

The incident, which took place on Friday, September 20, has sparked public outrage after a video of the encounter went viral on social media.

According to the video, the officer requested to search a shop, but the owner insisted that the officer search himself first before conducting a search of the premises.

In a dramatic turn of events, the video allegedly shows the officer removing packets of tramadol from his own pocket. The narrator in the video, a male voice, claims that the officer’s intention was to plant the drugs in the shop in an effort to falsely implicate the owner.

Tramadol, a controlled substance in Sierra Leone, is often linked to abuse and illegal trafficking. If the claims are confirmed, this attempt to frame an innocent shop owner would be a serious breach of trust by law enforcement.

The unidentified shop owner, who maintained his innocence throughout the incident, demanded the officer be searched before any shop inspection could take place. The confrontation has ignited a public call for accountability within the Sierra Leone Police, with the narrator in the video urging the government to take immediate action to address such misconduct among officers.

The Sierra Leone Police have yet to issue an official statement on the incident, and it remains unclear if any disciplinary action has been taken against the officer involved. The video has raised broader concerns about corruption and abuse of power within the police force, prompting citizens to demand reforms and greater oversight.

Public outcry continues to grow, with many calling for a full investigation into the matter and for stricter measures to ensure police accountability in Sierra Leone.
