The Inspector of Police, Edward K. Kamara of the Traffic Management Unit has on Thursday 2nd June2022 reported: that for the period of January to April 2022 data collected from their secretariat recorded 1,400 cases of road crashes of which 119 were fatal.

He revealed this at the usual police press briefing at George Street in Freetown.The Chief Inspector Kamara said of the 119 fatal crashes 96 of the victims were male while 23 were female.

He continued that the drivers unit recorded 394 crashes of seriously injured of which 241 were male and 153 were female.

Whereas, slightly injured crashes Court, 1,400 amounted to 887 of which 519 discharge of which were male while 368 were female.

He also disclosed that 808 cases of motor crash cases were charged to court during the period January to April 2022. He added that 544 of the number stakeholders in the of cases charged were convicted and fines were imposed on drivers that were found guilty s of whereas the remaining were sent to prison.

“We have 160 pending cases to be heard at the Magistrate Court, while 80 cases have been discharged,” he disclosed 24 of these cases, when sent to the Magistrate Court received re warnings.

Kamara also intimated the press that dialogue has recently been held with stakeholders in the transport sector with regards to mapping out strategies on how to curtail the menace of increased road crashes.
