The Sierra Leone Police Wives Association, on Friday 19th April, 2024, at the Sierra Leone Peacekeeping and Law Enforcement Academy (formerly Police Training School), officially crowned thirty-four (34) elected mammy queens of the various police barracks across the entire country.
In her welcome address, the President of the Police Wives Association Mrs. Matilda Doris Sellu expressed her appreciation for the peaceful conduct of the last Mammy Queen Elections and considered every candidate as a winner because the goal is to see the betterment of the Association. She congratulated all the elected mammy queens and their deputies for attaining the mantle of leadership and hastily reminded them that there was work ahead based on her findings from the previous tour she conducted on all the various police barracks across the country.
She reported that eight (8) solar power boreholes to supply water have been constructed at different police barracks to address the issue of water crisis affecting those barracks. She therefore called on the entire membership of the Association to work as a team in the fight against drugs especially Kush and to also meaningfully engage in other developmental projects needed for their various barracks.
The Inspector General of Police Mr. William Fayia Sellu, on his part, expressed profound gratitude for the myriad turnout of Police Wives from across the 34 Police Barracks country-wide. He pledged, on behalf of the Executive Management Board, to support the Association with the sum of One Hundred Thousand new Leones (Le 100,000) to be utilized for developmental projects.
On hearing this pledge, a thunderous roar of applause by members of the Police Wives Association shook the entire pavilion in appreciation for the IGP’s pledge. The IGP advised the Mammy Queens to always promptly solve arising issues within their barracks and to avoid escalation. The IGP promised to do a tour of all the barracks in the country.
The Guest Speaker Mrs. Fatmata Bintu Lavahun (President of the Armed Forces Wives Cooperative), emphasized the need for oneness, teamwork, and women supporting women’s initiative for the development of the barracks they are living in. She stressed that all join the fight against Kush so that future generations can be protected. Mrs. Lavahun applauded the support of the IGP and concluded by saying that leadership is about creating a positive impact when in power.
The official crowning and presentation of the staff of office were carried out colorfully to all the Mammy Queens in sequential order by utilizing several dignitaries which included: Mrs. Matilda Doris Sellu, Mrs. Fatmata Bintu Lavahun, Mrs. Kadi Fakondo (Rtd. AIG), Mrs. Gloria Tarawally (Rtd. AIG), AIG Memunatu Konteh-Jalloh, AIG Sylvester Koroma, Mrs. Mariama Munu, Mrs. Hawa Sovula, ACP Francis Brima Meinday, and Mr. William Fayia Sellu.
Muslim prayers for the success of the Association held at SILEA’s Masjid, climaxed the ceremony.
