The Pujehun District Education Primary School in Nijah Kpanga chiefdom is in a state of disrepair, raising serious concerns about the safety and well-being of its pupils and teachers.
Despite ongoing government efforts to enhance educational environments, the conditions at this school indicate a pressing need for immediate intervention.
Parents in the community have expressed their deep concerns, with many reluctant to send their children to school due to fears that the dilapidated structure may collapse at any moment.
This alarming situation has led to decreased school attendance, as families prioritize the safety of their children.
Headteacher Bockarie Mansaray emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We have made several complaints to the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education and other humanitarian organizations for immediate assistance, but all have proven futile.”
He highlighted that the dangerous state of the school poses a significant risk to the lives of both pupils and teachers, particularly during school hours.
In addition to structural concerns, Bockarie outlined several challenges facing the school, including a lack of essential learning materials, inadequate school fee subsidies, and insufficient performance-based financing support.
These issues hinder the effective operation of the school and impede the quality of education that pupils receive. He urged the government to address these concerns urgently.
Teacher Jah, who teaches class one, echoed the headteacher’s sentiments, pointing out the severe lack of resources. The classroom is affected by leaking roofs, insufficient desks and benches, and a complete absence of toilet and water facilities. Furthermore, the school lacks sporting materials, which are essential for promoting physical activity among pupils.
“The government wants to see a conducive environment for pupils, but these issues need to be addressed quickly,” Jah stated.
On his part the School Quality Assurance Officer MBSSE pujehun Thomas Abu said they are aware of the poor situation at the school but promise that any time government is set to rehabilitate schools in the district the school in question will surely among for repairs and have already factor it, for other supports to the school they are working with Central government to address the issues and as soon as support come they will provide it to them pleaded to them to exercise some patients.
The community remains hopeful that their voices will be heard and that timely assistance will be provided to transform Pujehun District Primary School into a safe and supportive learning environment for all.
