Some of the solar panels of the 520 solar lights installed along Lumley and Aberdeen Beach have been reportedly stolen by unscrupulous citizens, raising alarms about security and community responsibility.

The lights were part of a beautification project initiated by the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, under the leadership of Madam Nabeela Farida Tunis, in collaboration with Leone Rock Metal Group.

The initiative, which was launched in March, 2024, was to enhance the nighttime allure of the popular tourist destinations, aiming to boost Sierra Leone’s tourism sector.

During the launching ceremony of the solar light project held last year, Madam Fatmata Midas Hamid Carew, the General Manager of the National Tourist Board, emphasized on the importance of developing iconic beaches like Lumley and Aberdeen to meet international standards.

Sadly, reports have confirmed that some of the solar panels have been removed by individuals with little regard for the community’s progress.

Prior to the report of the stolen lights, Mr. Salim Silla, the Chief Technical Officer of Leone Rock Metal Group, had reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting development projects, urging collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism and private entities to promote tourism and enhance security measures.
