After over fifteen years under acting leadership, the Sierra Leone Traders Union in Kailahun district has finally elected its official leadership team.

The Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) oversaw the election held on Wednesday, February 28th, 2024, at the Kailahun Market Square.

The event drew the attention of various local authorities, including the Sierra Leone Police, the Kailahun District Council, the High Court Registrar, the town and paramount chiefs, civil society organizations, and media houses.

Gbessay Ngobeh, the former acting chairman, was elected chair unopposed. He highlighted his past contributions to the union, including establishing branches in all sixteen chiefdoms, fostering strong relationships with the district council and other institutions, and securing a permanent office space.

However, some observers and traders expressed concerns about the uncontested elections and the leadership’s composition. They raised concerns that the elections lacked competition, potentially hindering democratic participation and transparency.

Another observer said the leadership is not representative of the entire district, as all elected officials are from Kailahun township, neglecting the sixteen chiefdoms. Furthermore, there appears to be a concentration of power within one family, as Gbessay Ngobeh, his wife Sayon Ngobeh (chairlady), and Baba Sundufu Ngobeh (secretary general) all hold leadership positions.

Despite these concerns, the newly elected leaders will serve a five-year term, aiming to address the needs and concerns of all traders in the district.
