A tragic incident involving Stephen Mohamed Rogers, a final-year student at Njala University, Njala Mokonda Campus Kori Chiefdom Moyamba district has ignited widespread concern and demands for action within the community. On November 5, 2024, Rogers was struck by a vehicle belonging to the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank (SLCB) while heading to submit his internship report at the Njala Mokondae Campus.

Following the accident, Rogers was initially admitted to Kenema Government Hospital before being transferred to the Emergency Hospital in Freetown, where he underwent limb amputation on November 14, 2024. The incident has resulted in severe physical injuries and significant emotional trauma for both him and his family.

Despite the severity of the situation, there has been a notable absence of acknowledgment or support from the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank. Mr. Rogers reported that no representatives from the bank have reached out to assist him during his recovery, raising questions about the bank’s commitment to corporate social responsibility.

In response to this incident, the Njala University community, along with concerned citizens, is urging the bank to take immediate action. They are demanding financial compensation for Mr. Rogers’ medical expenses and recognition of the profound emotional and physical impact the accident has had on him and his family.

A spokesperson for Njala University emphasized the importance of collective action, stating, “This is a pivotal moment for us to collectively stand up for the rights and well-being of our students, particularly in the face of such tragic circumstances.”

The university community is also calling on the Government of Sierra Leone and the Sierra Leone Police to ensure accountability for those responsible for the accident. They are appealing to human rights organizations and the public for support in advocating for Mr. Rogers’ rights and well-being.

As this situation unfolds, it highlights the urgent need for compassion and accountability in the wake of such unfortunate events. The Njala University community remains hopeful that their appeal will prompt swift action from all relevant parties to ensure justice for Mr. Rogers.
