Two individuals, Captain Alie Badara Kanu and Thaimu Bangura, have appeared in court facing serious treason charges related to a plot to unlawfully overthrow the Government of Sierra Leone.

According to the indictment, the alleged conspiracy took place between June 2023 and March 2024.

The indictment details that Captain Alie Badara Kanu was involved in operating a WhatsApp communication channel with unknown individuals, and together with Thaimu Bangura, they created a WhatsApp group named “Movement for the Restoration of Democracy.” This group, which included Kanu and other members, was allegedly used to coordinate efforts to destabilize the government.

Prosecutors claim that the accused recruited members from the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, the Sierra Leone Police, and ex-military personnel. They are also alleged to have purchased weapons and prepared military codes and deployment plans to facilitate their plot. Additionally, Bangura is accused of preparing a code for weapons and circulating military deployments in early 2024.

The prosecution’s case includes claims that the accused planned to use a violent protest as a cover for their actions. Both Kanu and Bangura are said to have concealed information about their plot from other individuals involved.

During the court session, Detective Police Constable Sorie Conteh reported the absence of key witnesses. Defense Counsel M.Y. Kanu urged the prosecution to present their witnesses in the next session, emphasizing the seriousness of the charges. Magistrate Santigie Bangura instructed the prosecution to ensure that witnesses are available for the next court date.
