With support from Trócaire through the Accelerating and Promoting Education for All (APEAL) Project, the Welfare Society for Disable Sierra Leone (WESOFOD-SL) has commenced the adaptation and rehabilitation of five primary schools in Pujehun Township to improve accessibility for children with disabilities.
The rehabilitation works include the construction of ramps, widening of doors, and other major structural improvements aimed at creating a more inclusive and disability-friendly learning environment.
The five beneficiary schools are Every Nation Academy Primary School, Ansarul Primary School, UMA Primary School, UBC Primary School, and UMC Primary School, all located within Pujehun Township.
Speaking on the initiative, the Pujehun District Coordinator for WESOFOD-SL, Mohamed Sillah, said the APEAL Project is targeting 40 primary school teachers and 1,815 schoolchildren who will benefit from improved accessibility in their schools.
According to Sillah, the overall objective of the project is to create an enabling school environment that enhances the retention and participation of children with disabilities in primary education across Pujehun District. He noted that beyond infrastructural improvements, the project also seeks to increase awareness about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities, particularly barriers to education.

Key interventions under the APEAL Project include the rehabilitation of the five primary schools in Pujehun Township, the establishment and strengthening of 10 inclusive school clubs, and the provision of inclusive education training and ongoing support for 40 primary school teachers.
The initiative is expected to significantly improve access to quality education for children with disabilities, promote inclusive practices in schools, and foster greater community awareness about disability rights and inclusive education in Pujehun District.
