During a parliamentary session on Thursday, August 8, 2024, Opposition Leader Hon. Abdul Kargbo revealed that the old Lungi airport had been looted. Addressing the House while discussing the approval of presidential nominees, Kargbo expressed grave concerns about the current state of the Sierra Leone Airport Authority (SLAA), which he criticized under the stewardship of a nominee awaiting parliamentary approval for another role.
Kargbo disclosed that the Control Tower from the old airport had been unlawfully transferred to the new airport, managed by the Turkish firm Summah. He accused the management of the new airport of unfairly treating SLAA staff in terms of redundancy and noted that the old airport had been abandoned and neglected.
The Opposition Leader called for an investigation into the situation at SLAA and criticized the Deputy Ambassador to Liberia for failing to set a positive example for young people. He urged parliamentary nominees to support their compatriots and serve the nation diligently, warning of consequences for poor service delivery.
In his concluding remarks, the Leader of Government Business thanked contributors to the debate, reaffirmed the President’s authority to hire and fire, and emphasized the importance of national service. He also praised individuals such as Asma James and Fatmata Sawaneh for their contributions, advocated for gender equality, and called for national unity among politicians and citizens.
