Hon. Abdul Kargbo, an opposition leader in Sierra Leone and member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, has called for a strengthened early warning system to prevent crises and ensure political stability in the region.

Speaking on the importance of peace for development in West Africa, Hon. Kargbo stressed that no member state can thrive without stability.

He highlighted the role of the ECOWAS Early Warning and Response Network (ECOWARN) in monitoring security threats, crime, environmental concerns, governance issues, and health indicators across the region.

While acknowledging ECOWARN’s data collection capabilities, Hon. Kargbo emphasized the need for improved analysis and proactive use of this information to prevent escalation of potential crises.

He proposed the deployment of high-level diplomatic missions focused on fact-finding, discreet diplomacy, and applying diplomatic pressure to encourage dialogue during tense situations. These measures, he argued, could help de-escalate tensions and promote peaceful resolutions.
