In a significant move aimed at boosting food security and empowering women, the Women in Agriculture Progressive Association (WAPA) has officially launched in Sambaia Bendugu Chiefdom, Tonkolili District.
The association, led by local women farmers, has already cultivated over 30 acres of rice along with pepper and various vegetables to improve livelihoods in the region.
The launch event, held in Koyie Village, was spearheaded by Honourable Jawah Sesay, a vocal advocate for agricultural development in the region. Local stakeholders attended the ceremony, which included a key donation of Le80,000 by Mr. Robert Salia Kamara, Deputy Manager of Community Affairs at Leone Rock Metal Group (Kingho Mining Company). The contribution is set to enhance agricultural productivity in the chiefdom.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Kamara reaffirmed Kingho Mining’s commitment to supporting local farming efforts. “Our goal is to assist the government in addressing food security challenges, and empowering women plays a central role in that mission. This contribution will help boost productivity and support sustainable development in the area,” Kamara said.
Honourable Sesay praised the initiative, emphasizing its potential to reduce reliance on external food sources. “This partnership between WAPA and Kingho Mining Company is a model for fostering sustainable growth. Agriculture is the backbone of our community, and empowering women ensures our future,” he remarked.
The association’s focus on rice cultivation aligns with national goals of achieving self-sufficiency in staple foods. Fatmata Koroma, a member of WAPA, described the initiative as “a lifeline” for the community, as it provides both economic empowerment and vital food resources.
The launch of WAPA and the support from Kingho Mining are seen as critical steps in tackling food insecurity and promoting women’s empowerment in Tonkolili. The association aims to inspire similar initiatives in neighboring regions, contributing to the agricultural development of the district and beyond.
