Air Sierra Leone has announced the temporary suspension of its London-Freetown and London-Banjul flight services for the month of May following the sudden bankruptcy and liquidation of its aircraft provider, Ascend Airways.

In a statement issued to customers, the airline described the development as unforeseen, noting that the immediate cessation of Ascend Airways’ operations has significantly disrupted its flight schedule.

“As a precautionary measure to ensure safety, reliability, and long-term sustainability, we have taken the difficult decision to suspend operations on these routes while we secure a new aircraft provider and complete all regulatory requirements,” the statement read.

The airline reassured passengers that affected customers will receive full support, including options for refunds or rebooking on future flights once services resume.

Speaking on the situation, Group Chief Operating Officer Sukhjinder Mann expressed surprise at the abrupt closure of Ascend Airways.

“We were equally shocked by the immediate cessation of Ascend Airways’ operations. They have been an excellent business partner, and we had no indication of any financial challenges,” Mann stated.

He further attributed part of the wider instability in the aviation sector to ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict in the Middle East, which has forced several airlines globally to scale back operations or shut down entirely.

Despite the setback, Mann emphasised that Air Sierra Leone remains financially stable and is actively engaging alternative aircraft operators. He noted that the suspension period will allow sufficient time to complete aircraft registration processes with aviation authorities in Sierra Leone, the United Kingdom, and The Gambia.

“While we are hopeful of resuming operations sooner, our priority is to avoid further disruption to the travelling public,” he added.

Mann also extended appreciation to Ascend Airways for their professionalism during the partnership and expressed hope that affected staff would soon find new opportunities within the industry.

Air Sierra Leone reaffirmed its commitment to serving its growing customer base and maintaining its position as a key carrier connecting West Africa to Europe and other regional destinations.

Passengers seeking further information or assistance have been encouraged to contact the airline through its official communication channels, including email, telephone, and social media platforms.

The airline concluded by thanking customers for their patience and continued support as it works toward restoring normal operations.
