Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, has laid before Parliament the Protocol to the African Charter on the Establishment of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, marking the formal commencement of Sierra Leone’s ratification process.
The Minister made the announcement on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, stating that the move reflects the Government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s engagement with continental human rights institutions and advancing the rule of law.
According to Sesay, the tabling of the protocol coincides with the 20th anniversary of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, making the occasion significant as Sierra Leone moves towards becoming a State Party to the continental human rights mechanism.
He noted that presenting the protocol to Parliament represents the first formal step in the constitutional process required for ratification, paving the way for legislative consideration and approval.
Once ratified, Sierra Leone will join other African Union member states that are party to the protocol establishing the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, a judicial body mandated to protect and promote human rights across the continent.
The Minister described the parliamentary exercise as an important milestone in Sierra Leone’s efforts to strengthen its commitment to regional human rights frameworks and uphold its international obligations under the African human rights system.
