Determined to change the current student leadership dynamics at the University of Makeni by skillfully utilizing his previous leadership experience as President of the Political and International Relations Department, Abdulai Barrie has vowed to make the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) financially independent if elected to serve as the chairperson.

Unveiling his sustainable plans to achieve the ambitious goal, Barrie proposes to construct two ultra-modern multi-faceted sports courts both at Fatima and Sylvanus Koroma Campuses.

“These two courts will be constructed in my 100 days in office,” he told Sierraloaded.

He further revealed that a minimal cost will be attached to the facilities for access, thereby generating revenue for the council while serving the students.

Emphasizing the importance of making the SRC financially self-reliant, Barrie recounts that reliance on external funding often limits the council’s ability to function effectively and implement student-centred initiatives.

“It is now more urgent than ever for the SRC to be self-financing. The over-reliance on outside funding cripples its ability to function well and implement student-centred initiatives,” Abdulai Barrie stressed.

In addition to his vision to make the SRC financially self-reliant, Barrie highlighted other key initiatives in his manifesto including but not limited to students’ welfare services, enhancing academic excellence, provision of scholarship opportunities, and advocacy to build a strong student-lecturer community.

He has also not only pledged to strengthen cohesion among students but also reaffirmed his commitment to promoting participatory communication in “building an SRC with everyone for everyone.”
