Chernor Bah, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, has addressed the ongoing strike at the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), describing it as being based on “fake news.”

In a recent statement, Bah expressed frustration, particularly because the striking workers at SLBC are journalists. He emphasized that the strike is grounded in misinformation.

Some of the staff, according to Bah, believe that the board stopped a studio renovation project, which he denied, saying the board had not made any such decision.

Bah also said that someone misled the staff into believing that their pay raises were delayed because of the board’s actions. He mentioned that the workers had been told they would receive pay increases in January, but when that didn’t happen, they blamed the board for blocking it. He pointed out that these claims were untrue. Despite his efforts to explain the situation, Bah said the workers continue to hold onto these misunderstandings.

“This is bad, it’s terrible,” Bah said, explaining that the misinformation about the January pay raise is fueling the strike.

The minister emphasized that the strike is the result of misinformation, which continues to fuel confusion and tension between the staff, management, and the board.
