The President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, has been named a Champion for Sustainable Financing for Education by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), in recognition of his role in promoting education financing and political leadership in the sector.

The announcement was made in a statement released by the Global Partnership for Education on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

According to the statement, the international education partnership expressed satisfaction in naming President Bio to the role as part of efforts to strengthen global advocacy for sustainable education financing.

We are pleased to announce the President of Sierra Leone, Dr Julius Maada Bio as a new GPE Champion for Sustainable Financing for Education,” the Global Partnership for Education said in the statement.

The organization noted that President Bio’s new role will focus on strengthening political commitment and mobilizing support to expand investment in education across the world.

President Bio will help mobilize political leadership and international momentum to Fund Education and Multiply Possibility for all,” the statement added.

The Global Partnership for Education is a global multilateral partnership dedicated to strengthening education systems in developing countries by supporting funding, policy reforms and international collaboration.

President Bio has consistently placed education at the center of his administration’s development agenda since taking office, particularly through the government’s flagship education program aimed at expanding access to schooling across Sierra Leone.

His appointment as a GPE Champion is expected to further amplify Sierra Leone’s voice in global discussions on sustainable financing for education while encouraging increased political commitment and international cooperation to support education systems worldwide.
