Sierra Leone’s President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has accepted an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping for a three-day state visit to China, scheduled from February 28th to March 2nd, 2024.

Global Times reports that this trip aims to solidify diplomatic relations and secure potential investments for Sierra Leone.

According to senior diplomatic sources, the visit will witness the signing of new bilateral agreements beneficial to both countries. Notably, President Bio is anticipated to ink an agreement for the construction of the Lungi Bridge during his stay in China. Additionally, sources from State House indicate that President Bio intends to advocate for increased foreign direct investment from China during the visit.

This visit marks President Bio’s second official trip to China, following his initial state visit in August 2018, shortly after assuming office as President of Sierra Leone.

Recent diplomatic developments have seen Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Abu Bakarr Karim, presenting his letter of credence to President Xi Jinping. During the exchange, President Xi affirmed China’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties with Sierra Leone.

Accompanying President Bio on this pivotal state visit to China will be key government officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Finance, as well as heads of various departments and agencies.
