The Bo City Council, under the leadership of Mayor Kobba Musa, conducted a large-scale cleanup campaign on Saturday, December 14, 2024, mobilizing hundreds of residents and stakeholders to address waste and sanitation challenges across the city.

The day-long exercise targeted key areas, including streets, drainage systems, public spaces, and dumping sites within the Bo Municipality. The initiative aimed to enhance environmental sustainability, improve public health, and foster community pride.

The campaign began early in the morning with volunteers, council members, Sierra Leone Police (SLP), local organizations, and Njala University students joining forces to make the city spotless. Participants from diverse sectors, including traders, drivers, and civil society groups, engaged in activities such as sweeping streets, clearing blocked drainage systems, and removing waste from communal dumping grounds.

By evening, the city showed visible improvement, with unclogged drainages reducing flooding risks and cleaner streets enhancing hygiene and sanitation. Mayor Musa praised the collective effort, stating, “This is more than just a cleanup; it’s a call to action for sustainable waste management and community pride.”

The cleanup drive emphasized collaboration, with local businesses and media houses providing logistical support and raising awareness. Special recognition was given to the Sierra Leone Police, the Bike Riders Union, and Bo’s radio stations for their active participation and promotion of the initiative.

Mayor Musa highlighted the economic and social advantages of a clean city, noting that improved sanitation attracts investors, promotes tourism, and enhances residents’ quality of life. “A clean city creates opportunities for growth and improves public health,” he said.

He urged residents to adopt sustainable waste disposal practices and called for continued community engagement in future cleanup campaigns. “Let us make proper waste management a way of life and build a greener, healthier Bo,” the mayor added.

The Bo City Council’s efforts set an example for other municipalities across Sierra Leone, demonstrating the impact of community-driven initiatives. As the festive season approaches, Mayor Musa reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining a clean and vibrant city, inviting residents to join ongoing efforts for a better Bo.
