The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Freetown hosted a farewell reception on Thursday, August 22, 2024, for 189 Sierra Leonean students who have been awarded scholarships to pursue further studies at Chinese universities.

The event, held at the Bintumani Hotel in Freetown, highlighted the ongoing collaboration between China and Sierra Leone, marking a significant milestone in their longstanding relationship.

Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Wang Qing, addressed the gathering, congratulating the scholarship recipients on their achievements. He emphasized that the scholarships are a testament to the Sierra Leonean government’s efforts to promote transformative development under President Julius Maada Bio’s leadership.

Ambassador Qing urged the students to use this opportunity to enhance their academic skills and immerse themselves in Chinese culture, reminding them of their dual roles as scholars and ambassadors of Sierra Leone.

“Over the past 20 years, the Chinese government has awarded scholarships to more than 1,300 Sierra Leonean students,” Ambassador Qing stated, encouraging the students to work hard and meet the expectations of their nation.

Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Haja Ramatulai Wurie, also spoke at the event, congratulating the students and underscoring the significance of the day. She highlighted the enduring friendship between Sierra Leone and China, which has spanned over five decades, and acknowledged China’s role in supporting Sierra Leone’s peace, stability, and development. Minister Wurie also emphasized the importance of Human Capital Development and the Free Quality Education initiative, urging the students to be resilient and represent Sierra Leone positively.
