The Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone has hosted a reception Party on February 11th 2024 to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

The Lunar New Year is one of the most popular holidays in China, though it is celebrated all across the Asian continent and in pockets of ethnic communities around the globe. The holiday celebration dates back to the Chinese agrarian tradition.

The Minister of Tourism Mrs. Nabila Tunis, Deputy Minister of Defense, Mr. Muana Brima Massaquoi were among host of notable dignitaries who were in attendance.

Speaking on the Significance of the celebration, Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Mr. Wang Qing, described the Spring Festival as a time for family reunion, friendship celebration, and reflection on the past and future. He expressed appreciation to- all those who have supported the sustainability of the Sierra Leone and China bilateral relationship.

Highlighting the gains and impact of China in the global economy. Amb. Qing pointed out that they have been able to manage the Covid 19 pandemic with sustainable economic recovery He noted China’s achievements in managing the COVID-19 pandemic and sustaining economic recovery of GDP exceeding 126 trillion yuan, marking a 5.2% year-on-year increase adding that China’s contribution to global economic growth remained significant at 32%.

Every year, the holiday also known as the spring festival, begins on the second new moon after the winter solstice. In 2024, the celebration marks the year of the dragon.
