Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh has stated that he will be eligible to contest for the presidency next year when he turns 40, while crediting President Julius Maada Bio for his mentorship and leadership guidance.

In a reflective public message, Sengeh expressed appreciation for President Bio’s role in shaping his leadership journey, describing himself as “a much better leader and problem solver” as a result of the President’s mentorship. He added that the relationship between them remains ongoing, noting that “we aren’t done yet.”

“Yes President Bio, I will be eligible to run for President next year when I clock 40! And thank you for mentoring me,” Sengeh wrote. He further quoted President Bio, saying: “The young people are smart, they know what they want.”

Sengeh also used the statement to reflect on broader leadership trends across Africa, arguing that many older political systems have not adequately prepared or mentored younger leaders. According to him, this has contributed to a reluctance in some quarters to envision younger people in top leadership roles.

He noted that across the continent, there is now a growing shift toward younger leaders who possess significant experience in public service, administration, and management. He described this as a positive development that he continues to learn from through his engagement with President Bio.

“We are choosing younger leaders with much more experience in service, leadership, administration and management than those before them,” he said, adding that this shift is something he observes and learns from “daily.”

Sengeh concluded by emphasizing a shared national and generational vision, stating: “Together #WeAreDelivering.”
