Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Rev. Dr Jonathan Titus-Williams, has underscored the strength of Sierra Leone-China relations, describing the partial handover of the China-Aid Rehabilitation Project of the National Stadium as a major milestone in the country’s development journey.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the National Stadium in Freetown, Rev. Dr Titus-Williams said the occasion reflects not only progress in infrastructure but also the enduring partnership between Sierra Leone and the People’s Republic of China.

Representing the Government of Sierra Leone, the Deputy Minister expressed appreciation to the Government and people of China for their continued support, noting that the rehabilitation project is a testament to the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations.

“Today’s occasion is more than the partial handover of a rehabilitated stadium; it is a celebration of progress, partnership, and the enduring friendship between Sierra Leone and China,” he stated.

Rev. Dr Titus-Williams highlighted China’s contributions to Sierra Leone’s development across key sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, energy, and skills development, describing China as one of the country’s most valued development partners.

He emphasised that the National Stadium is more than a sporting facility, noting that its rehabilitation will contribute to youth empowerment, national unity, and economic growth, while aligning with the Medium-Term National Development Plan (MTNDP) and the Government’s Big Five Game Changers.

“The fully rehabilitated National Stadium will stand as a lasting symbol of the friendship between Sierra Leone and China and of our shared commitment to national development,” he affirmed.

The event brought together senior government officials, the Chinese Ambassador, and other stakeholders. It concluded with the signing of the partial handover certificate, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a tour of the upgraded facilities, including the practice field, athletes’ hostel, and swimming pool.
