As Sierra Leone electioneering period draws closer, two separate delegations from the Economic of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) have concluded a fact-finding mission ahead of the June 24th, 2023 elections.

Meeting with the leadership of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), the delegates promised to support the ECSL in conducting free, fair, credible, and transparent elections.

The delegation stated that they have held ‘open and frank discussions’ with the leadership of ECSL and are impressed with the preparations that have been put in place by the ECSL.

The delegation denied reports that the international community was funding the elections in Sierra Leone.

“What we as members of the international community are doing is supporting the ECSL to conduct free, fair, transparent, and credible elections…The Sierra Leone Government is providing a huge chunk of the funds and is charged with the responsibility of providing security throughout the country before, during, and after the 24th June elections”.

It was further stated that there were minor issues they raised with the ECSL as a matter of concern but will not adversely affect the conduct and outcome of the June 24th elections.
