In a recent press release, the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) acknowledged a delay in the payment of polling staff who worked during the June 24th elections.

The delay was attributed to administrative and documentary issues required by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which had pledged to fund the payment of these staff members.

The ECSL stated that they have now successfully completed all the necessary documentary requirements and promptly submitted the relevant documents to the UNDP. As a result, they anticipate that the payment of polling staff will be processed and distributed by the end of the week.

Amidst challenges faced during the elections, the Commission expressed their heartfelt gratitude to all polling staff for their commendable work in the face of high levels of intimidation and, at times, threats to their safety. Despite these difficulties, the dedicated efforts of the polling staff ensured the successful conduct of the elections.

The ECSL also extended its appreciation to the polling staff for their patience and understanding during the period of the delay. The Commission assured that they are working tirelessly to expedite the payment process and ensure that the outstanding compensations are delivered as soon as possible.

With the matter now resolved, the Commission remains committed to addressing any future challenges that may arise and is determined to enhance the electoral process for the betterment of Sierra Leone’s democracy.
