The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) has commenced a two-day stakeholder engagement aimed at integrating Electoral and Political Education into the country’s university curriculum as part of efforts to strengthen democratic participation among young people.
The engagement, being held in collaboration with the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) and the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE), forms part of Recommendation 13 of the Cross-Party Committee Report.
The initiative seeks to equip students and young people with a deeper understanding of democratic governance, electoral processes, political participation, and civic responsibilities.
Stakeholders drawn from the education sector, political institutions, and other relevant bodies are participating in discussions on the framework for incorporating electoral and political education into higher learning institutions.
Speaking at the opening of the engagement, ECSL emphasized the importance of empowering young people with the knowledge and skills necessary to actively participate in democratic processes and contribute meaningfully to national development.
The Commission noted that introducing electoral and political education at the university level would help promote informed citizenship, encourage responsible political engagement, and strengthen confidence in democratic institutions.
The stakeholder engagement is expected to generate recommendations that will guide the development and implementation of the proposed curriculum across universities in Sierra Leone.
The initiative reflects ongoing efforts by ECSL and its partners to promote democratic values and civic awareness, while laying the foundation for a more informed, engaged, and participatory society.
