The Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), Edmond Sylvester Alpha, has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to strengthening democratic governance, electoral transparency and inclusive participation through continued engagement with international partners.

According to an official ECSL update issued on 26 May 2026, Alpha paid a courtesy visit to Ambassadors of the European Union (EU) and representatives of the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) in Freetown as part of ongoing efforts aimed at deepening cooperation and building public trust in Sierra Leone’s electoral process.

The ECSL stated that the meeting focused on key national issues relating to electoral reforms, implementation of the tripartite recommendations, inclusive participation and sustained support for democratic development in the country.

During the discussions, Alpha highlighted the Commission’s commitment to conducting elections that are free, fair, transparent and credible. He stressed the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in maintaining public confidence and trust in the electoral process.

The ECSL Chairman also briefed the Ambassadors on ongoing preparations and measures being implemented by the Commission to enhance inclusiveness in the electoral system, particularly for women, young people and persons with disabilities.

According to the ECSL statement, the European Union Ambassadors welcomed the engagement and expressed their willingness to continue supporting democracy and electoral integrity in Sierra Leone.

The EU representatives also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting democratic institutions and sustainable electoral processes through observation missions and civic engagement programmes.

The meeting further underscored the importance of peace, political tolerance and citizen participation in strengthening democratic governance and national cohesion.

The ECSL described the engagement as part of broader efforts to reinforce partnerships that promote credible electoral processes and democratic stability in Sierra Leone.
