The Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Jeneba Bangura, has publicly called out the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) for its continued failure to remit Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection.
In an recent media engagement, Commissioner Bangura revealed that despite the GST being a pass-through tax paid by the public on their electricity bills, the funds are not making their way into the government’s coffers.
The NRA chief emphasized that the authority has been in active communication with EDSA leadership to resolve the bottleneck. However, she noted with frustration that these discussions have yet to yield any tangible “fruits.”
“We are in communication with EDSA, but that is not yielding any fruits, currently,” Commissioner Bangura stated.
She issued a strong warning that if she seals EDSA’s office, it will not be open until every money owed to the government is paid. She however expressed Willingness to engage with the new leadership to resolve the Issue.
According to the commissioner, the NRA is also under pressure to meet ambitious domestic revenue targets to fund essential government services.
Commissioner General Bangura concluded by admitting that the priority remains clear: taxes collected from the public must be remitted to ensure the functioning of the state.
