Emmanuel Thorlli, the esteemed Managing Editor of the Nightwatch Newspaper known for his fearless journalism and unwavering dedication to holding the government accountable, finds himself behind bars at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Freetown since Friday, February 23, 2024. Thorlli’s arrest stems from a recent publication that authorities have questioned, sparking concerns about press freedom and the treatment of critical voices in Sierra Leone.
As a prominent figure in the journalistic community, Thorlli has consistently used his platform to shed light on government actions and demand transparency and accountability. His dedication to truth-telling and fearless reporting has earned him both admiration and scrutiny from those in power.
In response to Thorlli’s detention, a seasoned journalist emphasized the importance of allowing room for criticism and learning from it, rather than silencing dissenting voices. Calls for Thorlli’s immediate release from the CID and the upholding of press freedom have been echoing within the media landscape and civil society.
Notably, President Julius Maada Bio’s recent repeal of the criminal libel law has been commended as a step towards fostering a more open and democratic society in Sierra Leone. The move signifies a commitment to protecting freedom of speech and the press, values that are essential in a healthy democracy.
As the fate of Emmanuel Thorlli hangs in the balance, supporters and advocates continue to rally for his release and for the fundamental rights of journalists to be respected. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for press freedom and the need to safeguard the voices that uphold accountability and transparency in society.
In upholding press freedom and the Rights of Journalist to be respected, there are corresponding responsibilities which should be equally observed.
You as journalist have no right to say a ruling president should not be in power to see the nest election or ask for regime change
His fate doesn’t ‘hangs in the balance’, but he needs to face due legal process for insinuating that a democratically elected president should not be allowed to complete his term. That’s a threat to national security. I don’t know why you seem to ignore that basic fact?!
I’m a fan of your pieces Ranger…but sometimes you tend to omit facts (deontology of journalism)…what did Mr. Thorli do (facts ) to let himself be arrested by authorities??? When we lack objectivity in our publications we’ll always find ourselves in trouble…as an editor, it really will be a big shame for him…I’m afraid but you yourself are going against your ethics
Thorli if you put more in your filthy mouth than you can chew ,it will be dificult to swallow.
Femi C. Cole are also part of the”WE” who wouldn’t allow H. E. Rtd Brigadier Chief Julius Maada Wonnie Bio to complete is term as president? Or is such a reckless alterance you call ” press Freedom”? Thorli you are not going anywhere until you show us your COHORTS
But Emanuel is right bcos Madda Bio is not a legit president so why should he be left to kill us Sierra Leoneans and, he stole the election , who doesn’t knows that in the world,I blame the so-called international community and ECOWAS for allowing him to speak at their conferences , he should not be allowed so that he will know that he’s not recognized, shame on the Mende police, CID and military
