The Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone (USL), Professor Aiah R. Lebbie, has encouraged young academic staff to consider earning some of their higher degrees at institutions outside the USL system.

In a notice issued to all academic and administrative staff, Professor Lebbie said that more staff members are completing all their academic qualifications undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral within the university. While he noted that USL takes pride in the quality of its academic programmes, he said that relying only on internal training could affect future growth and innovation.

He explained that learning in different academic environments helps with the exchange of ideas, improves research and teaching, and keeps the university connected to the wider academic world.

The Vice Chancellor specifically called on Research and Teaching Assistants (RTAs) and other early-career academics to pursue their Master’s or Doctoral degrees at reputable institutions outside USL. He said this will help them return with new ideas and fresh energy for their work at USL.

Deputy Vice Chancellors, Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, and Heads of Units have been asked to guide their staff in this direction and help them explore study opportunities beyond the university.
